If I put an external harddrive on my xbox can I do firefight matchmaking?

I bought the 4gb one to since I figured you can get a terabyte drive for the $100 extra instead. But today when I tried to do firefight matchmaking they siad I needed a hard drive... If I put on the external drive will I be able to play firefight matchmaking?
