If we can take upon us the priesthood at random then why did Jesus Christ have to GIVE it to the apostles?

He had to give it to His apostles because we CANNOT take the priesthood upon us at random. It must be conferred upon us by those who already have been given it -- traced all the way back to the apostles and therefore to Jesus.
