Emily, your meter seems a bit forced but perhaps it's simply me. I will say with considerably more certainty that you seem to be using 'au fait' as a nominative phrase, but it is an adjective only when used properly. On a more positive note, 'an axis around which our behavior revolves' is a powerful metaphor for loyalty as an informing principle. Yes, loyalty is a choice, a conscious decision. I think you could make something even better of this poem with a little polishing of your meter or perhaps by extending the axial metaphor after introducing it earlier.
