Why do Americans seem so antipathetic and against being family oriented?

As a 17 year old in an American home I think we're annoyed by anyone of a higher authority because of all the restrictions and laws the states have for minors. Can't drive till 16/18, coming of age at 18, can't drink alcohol till 21.
