How do I slim down my calves?

My calves were always very slim up to the age of 14 (until I sprained my ankle). During the healing process I walked a certain different way to avoid pain in my foot, and even after my ankle healed- I continued walking the same way. Before when I would walk for a long time, my thighs would begin to burn, but now my calves burn. It's as if I use my calve muscles more when walking. The problem is deff. not genetic. So why are my calves bulking up? And what can I do to slim them back down? PLEASE HELP! I really don't like the way my calves look:( I tried running but it only softened my calves, but they're still not slim.
